The professional development of physics teachers in quality education of gifted students
Teaching physics has always represented a challenging pedagogical experience. The identification and nurture of gifted students is becoming an important professional issue for all educational experts, especially physics teachers. Educating gifted students demands continuous expert adaptation, and a change from the traditional teaching role towards a supportive, open, creative, responsible and competent pedagogical position. The gifted individuals represent a population of special social and educational interest, considering the specific aspects of their intellectual, emotional and social functioning, with special regard toward continuous professional teacher training. This paper aims to present the results of a theoretical and empirical survey research with physics teachers from Croatia, and report on the basic hypotheses about the effectiveness of diverse methodical approaches in teaching, as well as the required competencies for teachers educating the gifted. The results can help promote the quality of pedagogical approaches in the education of the gifted, and emphasise important relations of the studied teaching dimensions.
