The fortresses of the Frankopan noble family on the island of Krk –changes during the late middle ages
The church architecture of the island of Krk of the high and late medieval periods is well researched, but this is not the case with its secular architecture. Following the topic of this symposium about the centers of power in the urban settlements and its surroundings, in the first part of this paper we are introducing a survey of all known fortified feudal residences of the dukes (knezovi) of Krk on the island. We have brought some new ideas about the context of their building and their functioning concerning the settlements, which they have controlled. We can conclude a lot, not only based on the research of the material remains, but also from the written sources of Frankapan, but also of Venetian, origin. In the second part, we are explaining in more detail the processes of the changes, which the Frankapan fortresses on the island of Krk underwent in the course of the 15th century. By changes, we mean the characteristic abandonment of the original locations like Gradec – Rovoznik near Vrbik and Fortičina near Omišalj, in favour of the new centres of the feudal government, established on completely new locations, usually with direct access to the mentioned subdued settlements or on their peripheries. At the beginning of these processes during the 15th centres, we are explaining the importance of the fortification efforts of the duke (knez) Nikola IV. Frankapan in the town of Krk. We are concluding with the fortification activities of Ivan VII. The Younger Frankapan, which happened near the end of the family rule over the island.
