Whitefly in Croatia - Middle Adriatic Region

The faunistic and systematics of whitefly of Croatia has, until recently, been poorly researched. Data provided by Zahradnik in 1963 listed thirteen species from former Yugoslavia and identified only two species (Aleurolobus olivinus and Trialeurodes lauri) in Croatia. This data was presented in Whitefly of the World (Mound 1978). I first became involved in the study of whiteflies six years ago after my professor, academic Maceljski, had suggested that I investigate characteristics of Dialeurodes citri in Croatia for my PhD project. Since than, my studies have identified the following Aleyrodidae within the Croatian Middle Adriatic regions: Aleurolobus wunni, Aleurotrachelus jelinekii, Aleyrodes proletella, Aleyrodes elevatus, Bemisia afer, Bemisia tabaci, Dialeurodes citri, Siphoninus phillyreae, Trialeurodes vaporariorum, Trialeurodes lauri. Three more species presently remain unidentified. During 2001 Bemisia tabaci was closely monitored as a quarantine pest within Croatia. Samples were collected from a number of sites along with B. tabaci parasitoids. These are currently being characterised by EWSN members within mainland Europe.
