An Insight into the Effects of Genetic Drift in Small Human Isolate using the Surnames of 10 Generations of the Population (1750-2000)
In this study, an attempt was made to obtain an insight on how the drift worked in a very small human isolate (the Island of Lastovo, Croatia), using surnames of 10 generations of the population as the "allels" of the island s gene pool for the "surname" locus. The "locus" had 40 different surnames ("allels") in the population of the relatively constant size of N=200. It can be considered a very polymorphic locus in a small population, which is a model for demonstrating the effects of genetic drift for demonstrating the effects of genetic drift for true genetic polymorphism in e.g. medieval human villages, a dominant form of the social organisation of the vast majority of humans for at least several centuries. Many analogies between surnames and genes in terms of the genetic drift, gene flow, positive assortative mating, negative selection and mutation werw observed and disscussed.
