What we know about bivalves on the eastern Adriatic Sea ?
The answer to this question is short: much and little. Consequently, a review of the existing knowledge would be appreciated. The history of bivalve findings could be traced as far as two centuries back. Bivalves were mentioned in autecological and in check lists of biocoenological publications. The review of these data signifces that the northern Adriatic Sea is a better investigated area, than its southern parts. Bivalve check lists in some publications are relatively large in number, with more than 150 or 200 species. Still the total bivalve species number in the eastern Adriatic Sea is not known. Consequently, an exstaction of the valid name of each species from the numerous synonyms cited, especially in old publications, will be done. Recently immigrated species and those with a doubtful Adriatic distribution will be particularly noted. This presentation will perform a provisional bivalve check list and will discuss some problems relating to taxonomy and ecology, sample collection, their handling, cultivation problems, and finally, problems of bivalve shell preservation in the collections.
