The corrected Q-T interval in the electrocardiograms of male and female athletes
The duration of the Q-T interval adjusted for heart rate was analyzed in electrocardiograms of a sample consisting of 667 male and 197 female athletes aged between 12 and 45 years. The Q-T intervals were measured in a II standard lead. The rate-corrected Q-T interval was obtained according to the method developed by Bazett (3), expressed as the ratio of the duration of the Q-T interval in seconds to the square root of the duration of the Q-T interval in seconds to the square root of the duration of a heart cycle in seconds. The results have revealed the average value of the adjusted Q-T interval to be 0.387 +/- 0.032 sec. for males and 0.405 +/- 0.026 seconds for females. The longest duration of this interval in males was found in football players (0.48 +/- 0.031 sec.), who also account for the greatest number of prolonged Q-Tc intervals. In females the longest average duration of this interval was found in girls active in handball (0.42120 +/- 0.02405). The electrocardiograms of athletes active in endurance sports did not reveal a larger proportion of Q-Tc interval prolongations. Shorter Q-Tc intervals were observed in over 30% of the male and in only 6% female athletes comprising our sample ; however, among nearly 50% of them this reduction amounted to < 0.010 seconds.
