Evaluation of Croatian Clinoptilolite- and Montmorillonite-rich Tuffs for Ammonium Removal
In this study the possibility of ammonium removal from water solution by natural aluminosilicate exchangers was investigated. As the natural aluminosilicate exchangers the zeolite clinoptilolite from Donje Jesenje area and montmorillonite clay from the Kutina area were investigated. It has been obtained that various factor influence the ammonium bonding capacities to natural exchangers including pH conditions, the presence of compenting cations and chemical treatment of ion exchangers.The efficiency of ammonium bonding decreases with the increase of initial ammonium concentrations. It has been found that the acid modification of the natural clay decreases the ammonium removal efficiency and the alkaline modification increases the ammonium removal efficiency. Natural zeolite has a higher capacity of ammonium removal compared to clay.
