Biotransformation of Grape Pomace by White-rot Fungus Ceriporiopsis subvermispora into High Value Phenolic Compounds
The basidiomycete Ceriporiopsis subvermispora is a selective white-rot fungus that mainly depolymerizes lignin and hemicellulose leaving cellulose almost intact. Since it produces hydrolytic enzymes, it has potential to grow on different lignocellulosic substrates in solid-state conditions and to transform lignocellulose into a variety of valuable phenolic compounds. In this work, grape pomace, a waste that remains after winemaking process, was biologically treated with C. subvermispora during fifteen days. Nineteen different individual phenolic compounds were analysed by gradient UHPLC method. All analyses were conducted before, during and after the biological treatment. The biological treatment of grape pomace had positive effect on liberation of phenolic compounds from its complex lignocellulosic structure. The highest content of phenolic acids such as p-hydroxybenzoic (0.01 mg/gdb), protocatechuic (0.20 mg/gdb), p coumaric (0.01 mg/gdb), syringic (0.14 mg/gdb), caffeic (0.01 mg/gdb), ferulic (0.01 mg/gdb), and vanillic (0.05 mg/gdb) acid was observed after one day and for gallic acid (0.28 mg/gdb) after two day of biological treatment.
