Domain wall pinning in soft magnets: influence of surface domains
Over a last decade we developed a simple phenomenological model [1, 2] for the surface field (Hp) enhanced pinning of domain walls (DW) of the main (inner) domain structure on surface domains in a very soft ferromagnetic tapes. Recent application of this model on the results of a comprehensive study of the influence of static and dynamic Hps on the magnetic hysteresis and their parameters of untreated and surface treated (abraded by the emery paper at different angles in respect to tape axis) VITROVAC 6025Z tapes showed some inconsistency between the results for static and dynamic Hps and the model predictions. The origin of this discrepancy is the assumptions of simple model that enhancement of DW pinning increases linearly up to arbitrary strong Hp. Indeed, more realistic assumption that above some limiting value of Hp, the enhancement of DW pinning saturates, enables very good and self-consistent description of our experimental results. This result may be important for the future improvement of soft ferromagnets.
