Influence of education and dietary changes on blood glucose levels in patients suffering from diabetes mellitus type 2

Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic conditions characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. It is considered as one of the most common public health problems with a growing trend within population of western world. In Croatia there is around three hundred thousand diabetic patients with more than 40% un diagnosed cases. The objective of this study was to examine the potential of education as well as adequate and balanced nutrition in normalising blood glucose levels among patients suffering from diabetes mellitus type II. Subjects were 13 diabetic patients admitted to the daily hospital of the Clinical Hospital “Dubrava”. Anthropometric and biochemical parameters were monitored, as well as energy and macronutrients intake were calculated from the obtained 24-hour dietary records. The results showed that five-day long education together with balanced diabetic diet have impact on the regulation of the blood glucose levels as well as on concentration of cholesterol and triglycerides. The change in dietary and lifestyle habits are key factors for maintaining adequate glucose levels in diabetic patents.
