Development of sustainable enzyme-catalyzed biodiesel production in a microreactor
To compete with industrial, chemically synthesized process of biodiesel production, the bottle-neck of enzyme-catalyzed synthesis is the price of enzyme. This work aims to find a cheap and efficient enzyme-catalyzed biodiesel production in microbioreactors. For that purpose, a method for lipase production using oil-cake as a substrate for Thermomyces lanuginosus solid- state cultivation was developed. Biodiesel synthesis was performed as transesterification of edible oil with methanol catalyzed by commercial enzyme and own produced crude lipase extracts. Based on the results from batch bioreactor (V = 250 mL), where 97 % conversion of fatty acids methyl esters (FAME) was reached after 23h with commercial enzyme, several microreactor systems were tested: a) tubular teflon capillary microbioreactor (length : width = 500 mm : 1mm, internal volume 392.5 μL), b) glass microbioreactor (length : width: depth = 332 mm : 350 µm : 50 µm, internal volume 4.15 μL), c) integrated system comprised with two microchips connected in series where the first microchip was used for biodiesel production and the second one for simultaneous purification i.e. glycerol separation.
