Influence of pig slurry manuring on the hygienic well water quality
Large quantities of slurry on the farms are a hygienic and ecological problem. They are partly purified and released into water streams and partly sprayed over agricultural areas. Due to frequent uncontrolled spraying over these areas the soil becomes contaminated as well as surface and ground water. Water supplies in rural areas are from the wells that are not under sanitary control. Hygienic quality of well water close to a large pig farm was examined. The slurry from the farm is distributed to the surrounding soil. The investigations were carried out in the course of the spring and summer, during a vegetation season. Within the scope of parameters analysed, the larger content of nitrogenous compounds (nitrites, nitrates), phosphorus and organic matter was observed in drinking water. The larger content of mesophilic, coliform and fecal coliform bacteria was also found. To improve the water supplies in rural areas, zones of protection as well as a ban on uncontrolled spraying of slurry over agricultural areas should be introduced.
