A Device for the Production of Hydrogen Using Solar Energy: a Mathematical Model, a Simulation and an Experiment

This work focuses on solar energy as the primary renewable source of energy needed to drive the electrolysis of water, and, specifically, on the production of electrical energy using solar cells. Although the solar-thermal systems in use today are able to efficiently convert solar to electrical energy with up to 30% efficiency while the solar photovoltaic systems perform the same conversion with up to 20% efficiency, the fast development of photovoltaic technology promises un upgrade in conversion efficiency, up to 50%. Anticipating such a development, this work defines a mathematical model for a set-up consisting of photovoltaic cells, a water electrolyzer and a pressurized hydrogen storage vessel. In order to verify the mathematical model and simulation results, a physical model for the set-up was constructed including these components. Suitable measurements were performed with the model. A discussion based on the comparison of simulated and measured results, indicating the direction in which the mathematical model should be further developed, is presented. Finding the most suitable mathematical model represents the basis for designing and optimizing such systems.
