Parental Education, Family Income, and Students'STEM School Achievement: Research Findings From Croatian Primary School
This investigation included 1174 students and their parents, participating in STEM research project. Measure of STEM school achievement was computed as mean GPA on four STEM subjects. Educational level of both parents and monthly income per household member was reported by child’s parent. There was moderate positive correlation (.42, p < .001) between level of parental education and children’s STEM achievement. Family income was positively related to STEM achievement, but correlation was insignificant when controlling for parental education. Results are in the line with previous research that showed that among SES indicators, parental education has the biggest influence on child’s educational outcomes. Mediating mechanisms of parents’ beliefs and behaviors in STEM domain and children’s motivational constructs should be further investigated.
