Research and Development of Small Scale Hydro Power Plant Test Station: The Archimedes Turbine Case

This paper deals with the development of an Archimedes Turbine (AT) prototype plant and reports the experimental results based on prototype testing in realistic circumstances under laboratory conditions. AT hydro power stations show several benefits when compared to conventional hydro power stations since it does not require the construction of water dams or water storage reservoirs, and it also has a negligible influence on the river flow and ecological life in rivers (therefore it is environmentally friendly). The operating efficiency of AT hydro turbines reaches about 80% and is reasonably higher when compared to conventional turbines. An experimental AT small-scale hydro power plant prototype model was presented in this work as well as the numerical modelling. The influential geometry parameters were calculated for a small scale hydro power test station, and the experimental model was developed based on these calculations. The experimental model was used to determine the maximal power output and turbine efficiency for different operating circumstances. The AT diameter was 300 mm, length 1000 mm, with a screw surface of 300 mm. The experimental setup enabled an adjustment and control of the AT inclination angle with respect to the horizontal axis in a range of 21 ° to 30 °. The water flow rates used during the conduct of the experiments were set to 10 l/s and 12.21 l/s, while the rotational speed varied from 130 rpm to 50 rpm. The novelty of this work is the separation of generator losses from hydraulic losses, which results in “real power” measurements of the AT hydro power plant. Experiments were conducted for a case of AC and DC generators. The maximal power output measured on the AT with bearings, hydraulic and multiplier losses was 57 W, while the best efficiency was 68 % for an inclination angle of 21 ° and associated water flow of 10 l/s.
