Freshwater Alien and Invasive Vascular Plants in Croatia

Since 2006, non-native vascular plants of Croatia have been explored more or less intensively, including the development of national standards related to the specific criteria and terminology. Within the frame of the national database Flora Croatica (FCD) the separate module “Allochtonous Plants” was created (http://hirc.botanic.hr/fcd/InvazivneVrste/Sear ch.aspx), with the possibility for mapping and monitoring of alien/invasive plants, based on our personal observations, as well as data from literature and herbarium records. The first published preliminary list of Croatian invasive alien plants consisted of 64 taxa, but it is permanently updated and today in the FCD we can find 75 invasive alien plant taxa. According to our current knowledge, only a few of them are alien freshwater plants, but some of them might have strong invasive impacts on the environment. Out of those freshwater alien plants in Croatia, six are hydrophytes, and three are hygrophytes. Among them, three plants (Elodea canadensis, Paspalum distichum and P.dilatatum) are considered invasive in Croatia. Besides, some new observations indicate the presence of the species Egeria densa, with a great invasive potential in Croatian Mediterranean freshwaters. Furthermore, a very aggressive terrestrial invasive alien woody plant Amorpha fruticosa represents a significant problem for freshwater, wet and swamp habitats (successions) in the continental part of Croatia. An additional problem for freshwater habitats in Croatia is the phenomenon of the great invasive potential of some native plants (e.g. Hippuris vulgaris). For all mentioned taxa, their current status, distribution in Croatia, impacts, eradication and management measures (if any) and other available data will be briefly presented and discussed.
