The voice quality of vocal professionals and non-professionals in relation to the smoking status
This paper investigates the acoustical characteristics of the phonation (vowel /A/). The subjects were women between 35-45 years of age, 40 of them vocal professionals (teachers), and 30 non-professionals. The consumption of the tobacco products is also taken under the consideration. Vocal professionals are exposing their voice to extreme efforts. Such way of using the vocal mechanism, combined with ignorance of the correct usage of the vocal hygiene, can result with lesions of one or more voice features. An additional factor, leading to further decrease of the voice quality, is surely smoking. The data analysis has been made by using MDVP, Kay Elemetrics Corp., and the statistical elaboration by using the program Statistica for Windows 4.5. The results have showen considerably lover F0 among the vocal professionals, as well as higher variability of F0, increased shimmer and SPI, and higher number of breaks in phonation. It has been found that smokers have lower F0, shorter phonation, and more breaks in phonation.
