Mediating Croatian Antiquity: from global to local and back

Interdisciplinary research into travelogues stemming from the European fashion of the Grand Tour links contemporary methodologies in the study of architectural history, Dalmatia in the European Grand Tour of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, using the examples of selected travelogues. Via the media of the time we communicate today with aspects of the past. We observe and read accounts of space from the eighteenth and ninetheenth centuries that were primarily motivated by the impulse to record antiquity as a universal language in art. But in them we can recognise what the medium also transmits - details of an entirely local character, which we can use today for information about the spirit of the time, and the place, the specific and local that we wish to preserve. In the current, often decontextualised global world, when authenticity is once again coming into focus, we devote our attention to the specific features of a space that has been recorded in history.
