Fire weather research in Croatia
The mid-Adriatic region in Croatia is the most vulnerable to wildfires due to the joint effects of weather conditions, easily flammable Mediterranean vegetation and an increase in population during the summer season. Wildfires inflict serious damage to agricultural sites and forests and endanger properties and human lives. How climate change impacts wildfire risk in Croatia, what are the meteorological effects that help fire to spread rapidly and are there additional meteorological indicators that can help us establish better and more effective warning system? One of the most important protections against forest fires is providing a good education for children. They learn effectively through play, multimedia and interactive lectures. Having that in mind, the Croatian Agrometeorological Society (www.en.hagmd.hr) produced the animated film and comic Fire is no joke with motto: “Do not play with flame and smoke, fire is no joke!". More than 6000 children in elementary schools across Croatia watched the film as a part of the Little School “Fire is no joke”.
