Difference in anxiety sensitivity between people with dry eye disease indications and people without dry eye disease indications in general population

Dry eye disease (DED) is growing health problem. The prevalence can reach one third of population (Gayton, 2009). The DED seems to be frequent in patients with depression, generalized anxiety disorder, depression and anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (Wen et. al., 2012). Some studies even clearly pointed out that there are significant differences between patients with DED and non-diagnosed patients in stress, anxiety and depression (Yilmaz, Gokler i Unsal, 2015). The aim of the present study was to explore whether anxiety sensitivity plays a role in patients’ experience of DED symptoms. The online study was conducted on convenience sample of respondents from general population during the one month period. The study collected socio-demographics information about the frequency of computers usage and previous difficulties with vision and eyes. DED indications were assessed with Ocular Surface Disease Inventory (OSDI, Allergan Inc., 1997). OSDI has shown to be a valid and reliable in measuring the severity of dry eye disease with satisfactory psychometric properties (Schiffman et. al., 2000). Anxiety sensitivity was assessed with Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI, Reiss et. al., 1986). According to score on the OSDI two subgroups were formed: DED group (n=183) and control group (n=206). Results showed that anxiety sensitivity was higher amongst DED group. Even though the difference is relatively small, her significance is encouraging since the data were collected in general population. This result provides confidence that the connections of DED and anxiety sensitivity should be investigated more deeply in the context of DED.
