Prolongirana trauma. Domovinski rat i suvremena hrvatska fotografija

The relationship between society and photography through the prism of political events and their photographic representation in the 1990s in Croatia was dominated on the one hand by photographers who, through the printed and TV media, influenced public opinion and collective memory. In contrast to these photographers, a certain number of artists “archived” the war, dedicating themselves to social criticism outside of the preferred political narrative. Primarily thanks to the exhibition context, a certain type of discourse mediated by scenes of conflict is institutionalised. Nevertheless, the photographs shown here are unseen by the vast majority, and remain in the space of art, bearing witness to several parallel realities. They all take part in a structural rereading, and we consider them within cultural-anthropological paradigms, particularly those related to memory.
