The characteristics of stroke in young patients

Stroke in the young adults occurs before the expected age and tends to excite interest because there is a feeling that the study of such a group may teach us more about strokes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk factors for ischemic stroke in young adults. Sixty-two cases of ischemic stroke in Croatian subjects aged 26 to 49 years are reviewed. The results of the following investigations performed in all patients were reviewed: complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, blood glucose and serum cholesterol, electrocardiogram (ECG) and brain CT. The results showed that fifty of them had large infarctions and 12 had lacunar infarctions, as diagnosed by CT scan. Among men, the most prominent risk factors were smoking and drinking, while in the women's group of patients, the leading risk factors were hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. Between men, in 8 cases, embolism of cardiac origin was suspected: atrial fibrillation in 2, myocardial infarction in 3, supraventricular extrasistols in 1, and tachycardia in one case, and we found only in one case embolism of cardiac origin among women. In the group of men, 11 cases probably caused by atherosclerosis, significant arterial lesions were found by CDFI in all cases, and in women group only in 5 cases. Causes considered as uncertain in men's group were found in 5 cases and in women's in 6 cases.
