Transgressions of Early Kusturica: A Director in Yugoslav and European Context
Early films of Emir Kusturica (Do You Remember Dolly Bell, When Father was Away on Business, The Time of the Gipsies) are all interesting in themselves, but also in the manner in which they lay the foundation of Kusturica's later work (Underground and beyond). It is easy to interpret them as trangressive towards the Yugoslav (and Bosnian) society of the era (1980s), but it is easy to find evidence of their easy acceptance into the dominant cinema culture. The issue is complex and has to be studied not only from the films themselves, but from the reactions as well (such as the coverage of Kusturica and his work in a very mainstream Zagreb-based journal Filmska kultura, and Sarajevo based journal Sineast).
