Cloning of the heat-inducible stress protein (hsp70) from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium
The stress proteins, the "classic" heat shock proteins, have a high potential as biomarkers for general sterss. In the present study it is shown that this heat shock response is a fundamental aspect of cellular physiology also in freshwater- and marine sponges, in which exposure to temperature stress or xenobiotics result in a dramatic reaction, induction of hsps (especially hsp70) and a suppression of other cellular proteins. With the isolation of the cDNA, coding for hsp70 in the marine sponge Geodia cydonium, a tool is now available to analyze for the first time the reaction of a sponge to stressors on molecular level.
