How to cope with a daying patient?

59-year old male patient was admitted to hospital care at the University Psychiatric Hospital Vrapče after attempting suicide by leaping into the river. 14 years ago he had been treated for posttraumatic stress disorder caused by war events. During hospitalization, he was diagnosed with inoperable gallbladder cancer. After oncological treatment, he returned to the Vrapče Hospital, now as a palliative patient. Palliative medicine has been developing globally for more than fifty years, and in the centre of interest is the person suffering from incurable diseases as well as concerns about their biological, psychological, social and spiritual condition and the condition of family members. By adopting the Strategic Plan for the Development of Palliative Care by the Government of the Republic of Croatia in December 2013, the establishment of a palliative care system in the Republic of Croatia began. Although certain improvements are detectable, palliative care is still not developing equally in all parts of our country nor is fully implemented in the Croatian health care system. Emotional difficulties, such as fear, feeling of guilt and helplessness are some of difficulties for staff employed in palliative care departments. One way of dealing with these difficulties is an organization called the so- called Ballint Supervisory Groups.
