Motivation for Choosing Teaching as a Profession and Teachers' Competencies
Teachers are important factors of quality teaching and student learning outcomes, but also of changes in educational systems all around the world. In order to meet the demands of society, as well as their own, they are expected to be highly competent in all professional areas regarding successful adaptation to their work environment. Since motivation influences the quality as well as the quantity of knowledge, skills, and competencies, the aim of this paper was to examine whether there is a link between various motivational factors influencing profession choice and self-assessed competencies of the primary school teachers. Research on 320 primary school teachers from seven different counties of the Republic of Croatia, showed that the most important factors for choosing the teacher profession are factors pertaining to intrinsic motivation. The results confirm the significant positive correlation between intrinsic motivation and mastering of teacher competencies, while extrinsic motivation shows no correlation with any competence.
