Drying shrinkage of mortar containing wood biomass ash as supplementary cementitious material
The overall objective of the EU Directive 2009/28 is to increase the use of renewable energy by 20% by 2020. Biomass fuelled power plants are the biggest source of renewable energy in the EU. However, combustion of 1 tonne of wood biomass generates 5 MWh of energy, as well as 20 – 50 kilograms of wood biomass ash (WBA). The challenge arising, is the proper management of WBA. Currently, 70% of WBA is land filled, 20% tends to be used as a soil supplement in agriculture and 10% is used for miscellaneous application. This paper examines the possibility of using WBA as supplementary cementitious material. Mortars were prepared with 5, 10 and 15% of WBA as replacement of cement by mass. Paper gives an overview of WBA influence on fresh and hardened state properties (density, air content, consistence, compressive strength, drying shrinkage) at the same time considering the chemical composition of WBA and combustion technology used for its production
