Pathology on the 100th Anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi: He Died of Stroke

This year the whole world is celebrating the musical genius of Giuseppe Verdi, one of the greatest opera composers in musical , history. He was born in 1813 as a child of a country inn keeper. ~.ife in such a family was not easy. His father was not able to provide for Verdi the education he aspired to. So he turned to his benefactor Barezzi and married his daughter Marguerita. She died later as well as both their children. Opposite to Mozart of Schubert, 'who reached glory early and ended so very much too soon, Verdi was in that age still composing his first real success - Nabucco. His talents made him the favourite of the whole of Italy. He preferred scheduled life providing necessary peace for his creativity. In his forties he composed Rigoletto and La Traviata, in fifties Don Carlos and Masked Ball but nearing his sixties he gave the world his masterpiece - Aida. His final pearls he composed at age 75 - Otello and round 80 - Falstaff. His late eighties he spent all alone after his second wife Giuseppina Streponi died. As a person Verdi was mostly healthy and calm, somewhat introvert and depressive. His outlook was asthenic and thin. Sometimes he suffered headache, sore throat, gastric problems and rheumatic pains. At the age of 64 he asked for medical help because of chronic bronchitis. Episodes of dizziness became more and more frequent. He spent most of time in spas. In January 1901 he was found in bed with weakness of right extremities and global aphasia. One week later he suffered a massive stroke with unconsciousness and right hemiplegia. This last stroke came as relief after a series of minor strokes, which took Verdi, who was already long gone as a creator, ending his life at the age of 88, on 27th January 1901.
