Caulerpa taxifolia (Chlorophyta) on the Adriatic coast of Croatia (Malinska, Krk Island)
Variations in the covering and morphology were studied in green alga Caulerpa taxifolia settlement at the Malinska harbour (Krk Island) in the north Adriatic Sea. In the area, Caulerpa was at first noted in 1994. Presently the alga covered an area of about 3000m2 growing on silty sandy bottom at the 4-15m depth. In the period of the most luxurious growth the number of 6000 fronds ("leaves") 10 to 15cm long were noted per square metre. The length of stolons could reach 40-130m at the same surface. By the end of the winter and in the spring time the "leaves" began necrose progressively. During summer months, a new green fronds renewed from necrosed algal fragments. Investigations were discontinued in February 1996 when the algal settlement was extirpated by means of diver's suction pump.
