Inaugural Addresses of Croatian Presidents: What Contributes to the Ceremonial Aura

Shortly after the establishment of the independent and modern Republic of Croatia, more specifically after the second presidential term, it has been introduced the custom of delivering the inaugural speeches, so peculiar for Western democracies, especially the United States. The paper analyzes four speeches of three Croatian presidents, created for the ceremony of presidential inaugurations: Franjo Tuđman's (1997), Stipe Mesić’s (2000 ; 2005), and Ivo Josipović‘s (2010). Rhetorical analysis consists of the analysis of the text as well as the analysis of the voice in order to describe and determine linguistic and speaking elements specific for epideictic genre, i.e. characteristics of the speech contributing the solemnity of the ceremony. Regarding the different historical and political context in which speeches originate we expect similarities and differences in the use of topoi, in the frequency and sort of rhetorical figures, as well as in the language style. In the prosodic patterns there are expected differences between the speakers based on the measurements of the tone and intonation, speech rate and rhythm. Objective prosodic parameters are compared with the assessment of expressiveness, voice and pronunciation as well with the emotions speakers evokes.
