Behaviour of fibre reinforced cement composites under impact loading
Due to the inherent brittleness and low tensile strength of most cement-based elements, impact loadings can cause their severe damages. Mechanical properties of cement-based composites are highly dependent on the strain/loading rate. So far, performed experimental researches on the behavior of cement composites under medium and high strain/loading rates are still very rare. This paper presents the results of experimental tests of fibre-reinforced cement composites under impact. The compressive and bending strength of specimens was evaluated using a drop hammer test. The specimens were fabricated with different type and amount of fibre reinforcement. Mass of the hammer and drop height up to 12 m were varied, with single and repeated impact loading. In each mass drop test, impact forces and characteristic strains in the specimens were measured and corresponding strain rates were determined. The results regarding the bearing capacity, deformability, material properties and damage modes were compared to the results of previously performed static tests. Finally, main conclusions of this research are given.
