Prilog poznavanju bentoske flore i faune u Nacionalnom parku Mljet - makrofitobentos = Supplement to previous knowledge of benthic flora and fauna in National park Mljet- macrophytobenthos

During the summer seasons in 1995 an 1996 in the area of National Park Mljet the research of macrobenthic biocoenosis was performed. The data on species composition and distribution of benthic flora were given. 22 stations from the cape Tojsti to cape Goli and 10 sites in Mljet's lakes were surveyed by transect method. Skin and scuba diving were used for qualitative sampling of biological material and collecting data about the distribution of species on benthic zones down to depth of 40m. Up to now, about a hundred species of algae were identified. The Rhodophyta predominated. Two species of marine phanerogams were also found: Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa. The most significant and the most extended marine floral community on investigated area are the meadow of Posidonia oceanica that is particularly developed along the northwestern coast where the bottom is less inclined. Meadows of Cymodocea nodosa are the most significant community of marine macroflora in the Mljet's lakes and Soline bay. On southeastern coast, where the steep cliffs prevail, coralline bioceonoses are especially well developed and outstanding settlements of red calcareous algae Pseudolithophyllum expansum was noted. Biocoenosis of photophylic algae on hard bottom in the infralitoral zone seems to be generally poorly developed.
