The role of hydrogen in energy transition

Hydrogen can be efficiently produced from water – a vast resource. Hydrogen itself, hydrogen production via water electrolysis process, hydrogen storage, distribution and end-use are environmentally benign, thus perfectly complementary to equally environmentally friendly renewable energy sources. Large amounts of hydrogen could be stored in underground structures such as aquifers and depleted gas wells. Hydrogen can be used just as natural gas is used today. Furthermore, hydrogen could be injected in existing natural gas distribution grid. In a transition period a power-to-gas concept is being proposed which includes generation of hydrogen by water electrolysis and then combining it with carbon dioxide to generate methane – a “synthetic natural gas.” Hydrogen and/or natural gas can be used in fuel cells and generate electricity on demand during periods when the renewable energy sources are not available or not sufficient to satisfy the need. However, once there are vast amounts of hydrogen stored and readily available hydrogen can be used as transportation fuel. Therefore, in energy system 100% based on renewable energy hydrogen may have a role as a long term energy storage medium, and as convenient fuel for long-distance heave-duty transportation. Once available, hydrogen may also be used for high temperature heat in industrial processes and as feedstock as well. This special issue is related to selected papers from the 8th International Conference on Hydrogen Production (ICH2P-2018) that was held in Zagreb, Croatia on July 17–19, 2018.
