New curriculum of mother language in Croatia – What about teachers?
In January 2019, 37 curricula for primary and secondary school subjects were published in government Gazette, as the first official outcomes of the national reform of educational system in the Republic of Croatia. To the school subject Croatian Language, a mother tongue of majority of pupils, the new curriculum has brought fundamental changes. Theoretical and methodological shift has been made from content-based and teaching-oriented old curriculum to competence-based and learning-oriented new curriculum. To mother tongue learning, the new curriculum introduces: re-defined subject areas, learning outcomes, systematic development of all language skills, greater teacher autonomy, etc. This paper investigates requirements that new Croatian Language curriculum sets out for primary school teachers. The findings will be discussed with regards to initial teacher education.
