Durability of potential fabrics for weed suppression affected by weathering
One of the important segments of wide agrotextile field is textile for weed suppression. The most commonly used material for this purpose is black polyethylene foil which is characterized by exceptional durability and significant effects regarding its application. However, some negative aspects are connected to their usage (long lifespan, high possibility of leaving harmful residues in the soil, non-recyclable). Conversely, materials based on natural fibres like cotton or jute (biobased agrotextiles) reduce an impact on environment, where such materials decomposed completely during and after use, which emphasize ecological acceptability. The only question is efficiency of weed control and the durability regarding the weathering. In this paper, the key properties of materials that are widely used as well as new potential fabrics, are investigated and compared.
