Networking of Central European Artists’ Associations via Exhibitions. The Slovenian Art Association, Czech Mánes and Polish Sztuka in Zagreb in the Early 20th Century

The history of European modernism is closely related to the founding and operation of Secessionist Associations. Formative locations for most Croatian artists at the turn of the 20th century were Munich and Vienna, where the Secession societies were founded in 1892 and 1897, aiming at bringing contemporary art to the wider audience by the means of exhibitions and magazines. The reconstruction of Artists Associations networks is based upon information obtained from digitized catalogues of Vienna and Munich Secessions, and on the information about the exhibitions held in Zagreb up to 1914, entered and processed by ARTNET database (HDLU). Image editions (reproductions) from catalogs and magazines, which allow for a comparative stylistic analysis, are also analyzed completing the image of the period which has started to reform art upon solid academic grounds. The analysis also encompasses proclamations, and programmatic texts by three Secession Associations published in the magazines Jugend, Ver Sacrum and Život.
