Relationship of subsurface chlorophyll maximum to diatoms and other microphytoplankton in the southern Adriatic Sea.
Seven transect cruises were conducted, extending from the west to east coast of the southern Adriatic Sea, with the objective of determining phytoplankton populations connected to the SCM layer. In the investigated area, the SCM occurred between the 50 and 75 m layer. It was located well below the depth of the maximum temperature and salinity gradient, and was associated with the nutricline. In the southern Adriatic, the SCM is located at the lowest depth were available light (~1%) makes it possible for phototrophic populations to capture nutrients advecting from the subeuphotic depths. The SCM in the southern Adriatic had a high species diversity of preservable forms and a numerical dominance of diatoms. According to community similarity coefficients, the surface (“ layer above” ) and SCM species assemblages were not different for diatoms and dinoflagellates, but were for cocclithophorids.
