A Visually Tuned Image Compression with Discrete Wavelet Transform

The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) has properties to effectively decorrelate and compact energy of digital images. With a quantization scheme based on the human visual characteristic and with an effective coding technique a high compression rate of images is possible. This article discusses the probability density function (PDF) of the noise introduced by quantization of the wavelet coefficients in dependence of the subband wavelet coefficients statistics and quantization step q. The results of the noise visibility measurements are given for different orthogonal and biorthogonal wavelets.
