Abstract:
Remote Environmental Noise Monitoring presents an interesting approach in monitoring phonic pollution for large areas. By the Environmental noise directive defined by the European Union in 2002 the phonic pollution needs to be reduced or prevented in order to minimise harmful effects caused by the environmental noise. To reduce environmental noise the main prerequisite is the continuous monitoring of the noise throughout time in multiple locations that can be problematic in dense urban or vast rural areas. Also, since noise is a multimedia signal it needs to be adequately processed and transmitted to the destination. In this paper we propose a system capable of transferring noise data from large number of sensors by the means of Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN). By implementing WMSN in environmental noise monitoring the need to set up additional infrastructure is eliminated and the ability to send multimedia data is assessed and enabled. The proposed system has the ability to host large number of WSN nodes enabling the propagation of the noise data from diverse locations. By implementing multimedia processing within WMSN nodes the processing of the data is distributed within the network, eliminating the centralised processing large amounts of data. The processing is performed by using FFT spectrum max-hold, transmitted every delta T seconds to the network coordinator.
