This article discusses recent developments in edible food coatings, with reference to: importance of edible food coatings ; barrier properties of edible films ; antimicrobial edible coatings ; edible coatings for minimally-processed fruits and vegetables ; superhydrophobic coating, a nanoscopic water repellent coating made from carnauba wax and beeswax ; and nutritional, environmental and economic benefits of edible coatings.
