On a multi-layer prehistoric site Podunavlje in Aljmaš, during excavation 2000/2001., in the pit from Baden culture period (3 400-2 900 BC), a bovine skeleton was found. The skeleton is almost completely preserved, while skull with horn, in a vertical position, was put in some kind of niche. We can assume that this burial had a ritual character. Approximate age in a moment of death, determinate by teeth condition is 28-34 months. According to epiphyses coalesce on the long bones, the animal was sacrificed in the age of 3 years. Based on the pelvis bones, this was a female cattle. Osteometrical analysis, which includes length and breadth measurements of long bones (Driesch, 1976), and comparison with previous researches of Baden culture bovine population (Kuzir, 2002 ; Trbojevic Vukicevic, 2002), we consider that this was domesticated form of cattle. |
