Mechanical and Sorption Properties of Modified Flax Fibers
This paper presents the investigation of mechanical and sorption properties of single flax fibres crosslinked with 1, 2, 3, 4- butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA). The improvement of the chemical modification performance was carried out by pre-treatment of fibres with sodium hydroxide and ultrasound. The purpose of the investigations was to determine whether the mechanical and sorption properties of the crosslinked fibres would be enhanced by the preswelling and ultrasound treatment before application of BTCA. The test results indicate that treatment with BTCA in the described conditions undoubtedly change the tested properties: fibres ability to absorb water decreases while the resistance to tenacity increases.
