Partial eradication of the Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh in Stari Grad Bay (Croatia)
At the end of 1997, before eradication, one large and five small stations of Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh, existed in the Stari Grad Bay (43o10&#8217 ; 54&#8217 ; &#8217 ; N - 16o35&#8217 ; 00&#8217 ; &#8217 ; E) (Hvar Island, Adriatic Sea, Croatia), covering 36 100 m2 of the affected surfaces of 122500 m2 with 1955 m of the affected shoreline in total. In October 1997, eradication of border algae colonies were carried out at the central station, and complete eradication of algae were done in all smaller remaining stations. The purpose was to prevent further expansion throughout the bay. Eradication was done manually with the aid of a suction pump and by covering the colonies with a black PVC foil. The eradication process lasted 15 days, and included 8 divers (202 hours of total diving time). Manual extraction was utilised with the aid of a suction pump and 250 m2 of smaller individual colonies was extracted. In total, 512 m2 of the algae colonies were covered with black PVC foil (approx. 990 m2 of black PVC foil was used). In January 1998, the covered alga had completely disappeared. During the summer of 1998, the eradicated area had a sporadic reappearance of algae.
