Effect of questionnaire length on response rates in online surveys: review of findings and guidelines for future research
Voluntary nature of participation, lack of personal contact and less formal nature of the research process make online surveys more prone to low response rates. Therefore it is especially important to study the factors that influence respondents' motivation to participate in an online survey. Length of the questionnaire is considered to be one of the most important factors affecting response rates. Nevertheless, studies on the effects of questionnaire length on rates of response are rare, both for offline and online surveys. This paper aims to give a review of the existing findings about this topic, and to propose some guidelines for the research on effects of questionnaire length on response rates in online surveys.
