Gelation properties and supramolecular organization trought 1H NMR spectroscopy
The gelation phenomena exhibited by low molecular weight organic compounds have recently attained increasing attention. Gelator molecules self-assemble into elongated aggregates through highly specific inter-molecular interactions. When these structures are sufficiently long and entangled they may entrap solvent molecules in a network, which leads to the formation of gels. In H-1 NMR spectra of gels only the molecules dissolved in the entrapped solvent could be observed. By using an internal standard, the concentration of dissolved gelator molecules could be determined. This enabled determination of the K(gel) values. From the plots of lnK(gek) vs 1/T, the delta H(gel) of gels have been determined. We shall discuss a photoinduced gelation system based on the maleic acid amide to fumaric acid amide photoisomerization monitored by H-1 NMR spectroscopy
