Holland's Personality Types in Croatian Sample: Cross-Cultural Comparison of RIASEC Models

The aim of this study was to compare the fit of Holland's circular model, Gati's hierarchical model and Alternative hierarchical model to Croatian sample and to determine whether they fit the data well. Croatian version of Holland's Self-directed Search (SDS) was used to assess the six RIASEC types. A total of 384 boys and girls were tested in fourth grade of high school (18-19 years old). Randomization test was conducted to evaluate the fit of different RIASEC models on Croatian vocational interest correlation matrices. Correspondence Index (CI) indicated the degree of fit of three theoretical models on empirical RIASEC structure. The results show that Gati's hierarchical model (CIG=0.64) and Alternative hierarchical model (CIA=0.69) fit the empirical RIASEC structure better than Holland's circular model (CIH=0.51). According to US benchmark samples presented in Rounds and Tracey (1996) only the two hierarchical models fit the data well. In addition, the fit of three models to Croatian sample was compared to the fit found in different countries. Our study supports earlier findings that hierarchical models are more adequate representation of the structure of vocational interests for non-US cultures.
