The effects of strip clearcutting on the regeneration and site properties of floodplain narrow-leaved ash stands
The research was carried out with the following goals: to determine how successfully narrow-leaved ash stands are regenerated with the strip clearcutting method, to describe and quantify some more significant factors influencing the success of regeneration with this method, and to recommend its application from the aspect of silviculture. The experimental plan included a typical floodplain stand of narrow-leaved ash near the River Sava in Croatia. According to the research results, natural and artificial regeneration proved to be more successful under the canopy of old trees. Of the tested methods of artificial regeneration, the best results were achieved with the method of planting seedlings. Site preparation with a harrow did not prove effective. Regeneration over bare areas was made more difficult by weeds and false indigo, as their dense canopy and large quantities decreased the amount of light to the values below those needed for the survival of the seedlings. Differences in soil humidity under the canopy and in the bare regeneration area were determined. Narrow-leaved ash stands cannot be regenerated with the strip cutting method within an acceptable regeneration period. From a silvicultural aspect, the strip clearcutting method did not prove effective in the regeneration of narrow-leaved ash stands. Research results show that the shelterwood method of regeneration was justified.
