Sažetak:
OBJECTIVE: To explore whether engagement of parents in shift work affects sleep habits of their adolescent-age children who attend school in two shifts. METHODS: The data were drawn from an extensive survey of sleep and daytime functioning of adolescents attending school one week in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Results of 1386 elementary and high school students (11-18 years of age) whose both parents were employed were studied. Sleep characteristics of adolescents were analysed by MANOVA with parents' working schedule, type of school and adolescents' gender as between-subject factors. RESULTS: Parents' working schedule significantly affected only the sleep patterns of high school adolescents. When attending school in the morning, adolescents with both parents day workers woke up somewhat later than adolescents with one shiftworking parent. In addition, they slept longer than adolescents with both parents shift workers. On weekends, adolescents with day working parents went to bed earlier than adolescents with both parents shift workers. They also had smaller bedtime delay on weekend with respect to morning and afternoon shift than adolescents whose one or both parents worked shifts. A significant interaction of parents' working schedule, type of school and gender for sleep extension on weekend with respect to afternoon shift was found. CONCLUSIONS: Parental involvement in shift work seems to have somewhat negative effect on sleep of high school adolescents. It contributes to earlier wake-up time and shorter sleep in a week when adolescents attend school in the morning, as well as to greater bedtime irregularity.
