Patron Saint Against Urolithiasis: Iconographic Perspective

Saint Liborius bishop of Le Mans (France) in the second half of the 4th century is the traditional Catholic patron saint invoked against urolithiasis. Not much is known about his pontificate, but that he was a fervent builder of churches. He died most probably in 397 (although some sources indicate it might have been 401) and was burried by St. Martin of Tours. Liborius' relics were translated to Paderborn (Germany) in 836. The cult of Saint Liborius is not strongly present in Europe, but he is venerated in Germany (most notably in Paderborn), Italy and Spain and also in western Croatia. In this paper votive paintings of saint Liborius will be presented. They demonstrate general atmosphere of European urological heritage in 18th century when different and opposite medical systems appeared. In spite of the fact that natural sciences were overcoming scholastic approaches and rationalism was overcoming religion still strong expressions of old traditionalism were evident notably the veneration of patron saints, among them Saint Liborius.
