In search of the sixth big factor of personality in four European languages

Replicability belongs to the central criteria that must be met by a useful model of personality structure and it is widely assumed that a model with five factors adequately meets this criterion. Based on comparisons of the results from various taxonomies alternative models have recently been proposed with structures assumed to be as replicable or even more replicable than the Big-Five factor structure. A potential weakness of some of these recent studies is that their conclusions were primarily based on rather informal comparisons of the semantic meaning of the factors across taxonomies. Although no ultimate criteria exist, it would be desirable to evaluate the replicability of factors on the basis of empirical results from more reliable procedures. One of the most promising alternative models of personality structure is the Six-Factor model proposed by Ashton et al. (2004) extending the Big-Five by an additional sixth factor, called Honesty or, alternatively, Honesty-Humility. The present study examined the replicability of the proposed sixth factor Honesty/Humility within the German, the Croatian, the Czech, and the Polish language by the use of Everett's (1983) procedure. A prototypicality rating procedure was used to provide an empirical check on the interpretation of the sixth factor in the four taxonomies.
